AASA survey: 40% of district leaders tap other budgets to pay for school meals

In an AASA survey of 423 district leaders, 40% said they cut instructional materials or tutoring spending, or used rainy day funds, to pay for school meals. 44% of superintendents said they lack the facilities to cook every meal from scratch, and more than 1 in 3 named student participation as their biggest operational challenge. AASA's Tara Thomas said reimbursement should cover food, equipment, labor and supplies.

Why it matters for directors: Participation is the metric superintendents are watching; bring it, along with your equipment and storage gaps, to budget conversations.
