Low dining hall use: Army's campus-style halls triple meals served
The U.S. Army's new campus-style dining halls, run by Compass Group USA, are serving three to four times as many meals as the old facilities did a year earlier. Fort Hood's 42 Bistro averaged 3,004 meals between February and mid-October, versus 973 at the old hall, with about 5,500 more soldiers served. Fort Carson rose from 878 to 3,324 and Fort Drum from 441 to more than 2,577. Soldiers order at touchscreen kiosks, can use an On Demand phone app for delivery to drop zones on base since Oct. 1, and spend $39 a day in flexible 'freedom dollars' however they choose.
Why it matters for directors: Flexibility, not mandates, is what's moving traffic. If your meal-plan users skip meals, test flexible dining dollars, mobile ordering and grab-and-go pickup before adding more stations.
